David's egg-tempera and acylic images are painted on a brilliant white gesso ground, normally laid on a rigid support. They use a restricted palette of earth colours without the use of white. This technique allows the pigments to shine through the white gound rather like the way light illuminates a stained glass window. Acrylics are a relatively new medium but have developed into an increasingly reliable and sophisticated medium. David uses them as in his water colours and egg-tempera paintings using a restricted palette on a white ground and without white on the palette. He has been very interested in the way the three media offer different qualities and opportunities. Because the techniques of acrylic and egg-tempera are employed in the same way, it is often difficult to tell the techniques apart.
