FACE VALUE : PORTRAITS IN PUBLIC AND PRIVATE

The Grosvenor Museum, Chester

13 February - 9 May 2010

Grosvenor Bulletin

"Face Value" looks at portraits which have been created for two very different audiences - the public at large, and private viewers consisting of family, friends and acquaintances. The exhibition includes a portrait by David Hillhouse.

"This is a portrait of the elder of our two sons. It was painted in 1987 when he was seven years old. I wanted to record a moment in our boys' childhood because everybody told us how quickly these years would pass. The yacht badge was a gift from Jonathan's grandmother Emily, when as a family we used to sail "Star Yachts" at New Brighton. It is an egg tempera painting on a white gesso panel. It is a very sensitive medium painted with no white pigment rather like a watercolour This gives a luminous effect with the pure tempera pigments lit by the brilliant white ground."

The painting is featured on the Grosvenor Museums exhibitions bulletin for February to May 2010.
