THE BANGOR WINDOW - HMS CONWAY

A new window has been designed by David Hillhouse for installation in the H. M. S. Conway Chapel at Birkenhead Priory. It shows the training ship off Bangor Pier where she was anchored between 1941 and 1949. The illustration is a watercolour visual of what will be a hand painted piece of glass to be unveiled at a special ceremony to be held on Saturday 11 November 2006. The window will thus be on display at the Remembrance Sunday Service to be held on the following day, 12 November.

The finished window will be approximately 104 cms. wide x 94 cms. high and painted on 6mm toughened plate glass. The Cadets are rowing their gig towards the ship. The rear of the 'Nelson' Figurehead is shown beneath the bowsprit completed with the crest from the Conway Cadet magazine. In the distance is Bangor Pier with the hills of the North Wales coast. Cick here to see a larger version of the design.

THE JAVA MEMORIAL WINDOWS

David has recently completed replicas of two Java Memorial Windows made by a British naval officer, Lt Cdr H C Upton RNVR, while a prisoner of war at Tandjong Priok camp near Batavia, Java. They were designed for the tiny St. George's Chapel which had been built within the camp by the prisoners between April - July 1942. Over 60 years on, the originals survive and are on permanent display at the Anglican Church of All Saints, Jakarta. The replicas, alongside 2 additional windows by David Hillhouse are now on display at National Memorial Arboretum, Alrewas, Staffordshire. Larger versions here

HMS Conway Window - A new hand painted window by David Hillhouse was unveiled at Birkenhead Priory on 13 November 2004. The window has 5 lights or sections and is painted on 6 mm toughened plate glass. The images are painted onto the surface of the glass in reverse so when installed appear correctly. The painted surface therefore cannot be touched from inside the building and are protected from the outside by wire mesh and protective sheets of perspex. You can view the window by clicking here.

The window was commissioned by the Friends of HMS Conway and traces the history and all the "homes" of this former Naval Training Ship. Featured in the window are the 3 Conway ships - Conway, Winchester and Nile - the shore based school at Plas Newydd, Anglesey shown with the Snowden mountains in the background. The smallest top window captures Conway Chapel at Birkenhead Priory into which the Friends of HMS Conway moved in 1996.

David's son Adam Hillhouse assisted in the painting of this substantial piece of hand painted glass. Images of the Unveiling and Remembrance Services can be seen here.
